Amanda Bruce

I am an Eating Disorder recovery activist and blogger who currently resides in the Boston area and loves my "real job" as a Licensed Mental Health Clinician.  I'm in recovery from an eating disorder myself - and love life as a recovered individual.  Recovery has allowed to enjoy running, singing, acting, dancing, and most of all, my 4 year old daughter.  I've been featured on Blogher in December of 2015, by SheKnows in November 2016, been a guest speaker for Simmons College, and contributed to an E-Book published by Disruptive Women in Health Care.

Are you pissed about the way women are treated by the media?  Pissed off by your friend who is diet-obsessed?  Pissed by the amount of women dying slowly from eating disorders everyday?  Well, here’s where you can get angry.  As a woman who’s been on the other side of food obsession, I consider it my duty to share my story, and to advocate for a society which promotes healthy body image.  No calories, weight numbers, or body-checking allowed here.

I want to talk about a lot of things – but most importantly, healthy eating. It isn’t a perfectly portioned turkey dinner or a new fad diet you just tried out. It’s eating a ton of green peppers and broccoli when you’re craving healthy food, and it’s eating a peanut butter and honey sandwich because you’re craving something from your childhood. It’s eating less sometimes the day after a holiday, and sometimes, healthy eating is Another Piece of Cake.

I'm just another thirty-something professional who found the courage to be normal.  For eating disorders bring us to the extremes – they render us emaciated and silent, or out-of-control and belligerent.  I used to swing between both extremes, but now I hover somewhere near the middle.  I am lucky.  I have supportive friends, a great therapist, and a laugh that cannot be contained.

Spread the word.  The madness has got to stop.  And I hope you can find a little hope and inspiration here.
