Kiley Hanish

I'm a bereaved mother and occupational therapist living in Los Angeles. I specialize in the transformative aspects of grief, specifically how storytelling, meaningful activities, experiences, mindfulness and the environment contribute to healing after loss. Previously, Kiley was an Assistant Professor of Clinical Occupational Therapy at the USC Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy.

I understand from personal experience how grief can transform one’s life: Ten years ago, my husband Sean and I tragically lost our son Norbert, who was stillborn. Together, we created the Emmy-nominated film “Return to Zero” starring Minnie Driver and Paul Adelstein, first feature film to tackle the taboo subject of stillbirth. It is based on our story.

Through “Return to Zero,” I have found much healing. My willingness to share my story and most vulnerable life moments has connected me to a community of families who have endured the unimaginable death of a baby, leaving her feeling less isolated in her grief.

This experience inspired me to create the Return to Zero Center for Healing, which through healing retreats, research, education, and outreach will help others live wholeheartedly after loss. Not only is she working directly with parents who have lost a child, she is also dedicated to educating doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals to support and care for parents who experience the unimaginable loss of a child at birth and in infancy.
