Jared is a traditionally masculine name with Hebrew roots. It comes from יָרֶד (Yared) or יֶרֶד (Yered) meaning "descent" but has also been suggested to mean "ruling," "commanding," or even, oddly enough, "rose."

Hebrew names similar to Jared include Seth, Nathan, Mark, Joshua, Joel, Stephen, Jeremiah, Jacob, David, Andrew, Jordan, or Adam. Other names with similar "ruler" meanings are Aldrich, Bardick, Czar, Darius, Donald, Duke, Enzo, Erick, Harry, Henry, Ronnie, Pharaoh, King, Thierry, and Zoltan. Names with different meanings but similar sounds include Jacob, Jasper, Jeremy, Jeremiah, Jerese, and of course alternate spellings such as Jarrod and Jerrod.

Famous Jareds include actors Jared Leto, Jared Harris and Jared Padalecki, athletes Jared Allen, Jared Cohen and Jared Goff, painter Jared French, and businessman Jared Kushner (aka husband of Ivanka Trump). Jared was also a favorite character on the series 'Silicon Valley.'

Popularity-wise, Jared is very much a 20th-century name; it really started taking off in the 1970s and saw its first peaks in 1982 and 1989. But its all-time high was in 1998-2000; in the latter year, more than 4,000 babies per million born in the U.S. were named Jared.

Jared in quotes:

“I just think it's really important to be yourself and not trying to be something you're not.”
— Jared Leto

"Richard, if we are going to change the name, we need to do it now. Names stick. My name's only Jared because Gavin called me that on my first day. My real name is Donald." — Jared on 'Silicon Valley'
