Robert

It started out as Hrodebert — and ended up one of the most popular boys' names of all time! Robert has been widely used in one form or another since at least the 13th century, when the Normans brought it to Britain. In the United States, Robert was ranked #1 of the top 1000 most popular baby names during the 1920s and in 1950. It stayed in the top 25 most popular for over a century! And though its rank today is #84, the fact that it's still in the top 100 is pretty impressive and speaks to the longevity of a true classic.

Comprised of the Germanic elements "hruod" (fame) and "beraht" (bright), Robert means — you guessed it — bright fame. And there are certainly plenty of famous Roberts throughout the name's long and illustrious history! It has been borne by kings, dukes, and saints, but most recognizable (these days, anyway) are probably the well-known Roberts of literature and pop culture. There's poet Robert Frost and author Robert Louis Stevenson; actors Robert De Niro, Robert Downey Jr., and Robert Pattinson; singers Robert (Bob) Dylan and Robert (Bob) Marley. It would be literally impossible to name all the famous Roberts, but with a name as perennially popular as that, suffice it to say there have been a lot.

Part of the appeal of Robert is that it it's not only a strong name in itself, but also has so many nickname possibilities. Rob and Robbie, Bob and Bobby, Bert and Bertie. For a name as old as it is, Robert still remains a fantastic, solid choice — because you can never go wrong with a classic!
