The name Scott has a very simple meaning behind it: it was used to describe someone from Scotland, i.e., a "Scot." Originally used only as a surname, it has now transferred to being used as a first and middle name as well — and a perennially popular one at that! It first entered the U.S. Social Security Administration's top 1000 baby names during the 1940s, and has been there ever since; at its peak in 1962 (and again in 1972), it was as high as #11 on the chart.

While its current standing isn't quite as lofty, Scott remains a solid choice that's still very firmly in the top 1000, and showing no signs of going anywhere soon.

A few notable Scotts are ragtime musician Scott Joplin; poet and author of the U.S. National Anthem Francis Scott Key; novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald; poet, novelist, and historian Sir Walter Scott; film director Ridley Scott; actors Scott Bakula and Scott Eastwood; and reality TV personality Scott Disick.
