Talk about a timeless classic: The name Tabitha goes waaay back as a baby name, and there’s a good reason it has been used for literally ages. It’s a beautiful name of Aramaic origin and comes from the Aramaic word "tabita," meaning "gazelle." Tabitha is also a biblical name: According to the New Testament, Tabitha (also referred to as Dorcas) was a kind and benevolent woman who was raised from the dead by the apostle Peter.

This graceful girl name has been used since the 16th century and is still popular, although it’s unique enough in the United States today that you’re not likely to run into too many Tabithas in any one place. Tabitha has been in the Social Security Administration’s top 1000 baby names since 1966, and it reached peak popularity in 1978, when it was the 126th most-popular name. However, its use has dropped in recent years, and it fell out of the top 1000 in 2017.

Famous women with the name Tabitha include actress and vegan food influencer Tabitha Brown, fine art photographer and former MTV News reporter Tabitha Soren, Canadian actress and comedian Tabitha St. Germain, and author Tabitha King. The name has also been used for fictional characters — most famously on the 60s TV show ‘Bewitched.’ Tabitha “Tibby” Rollins was also the name of a main character in 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.'
