When it comes to orgasms, we all probably feel a bit like investigative reporters. What is it? How do we have one? What does it feel like? With so many questions, achieving orgasm can seem much more elusive than it actually is. Which is why we’ve done the work to find out all there is to know about orgasms.
What is an Orgasm?
It”s the peak of sexual arousal (or a sexual plateau) that happens when the muscles that have tightened during sexual stimulation relax and your whole body is overcome with feelings of pleasure and gratification. For some women, this moment of bliss causes an increased heart rate, body spasms, quickened breath and increased blood pressure (in a good way of course!).
One of the reasons orgasm feels so good is because during that moment of ecstasy, feel-good endorphins are released into the bloodstream.
How to have an orgasm
Any type of sexual stimulation can cause you to climax or have the Big O — whether it be intercourse, oral sex, anal sex, masturbation, fantasizing or just touching yourself. It all comes down to what strikes your fancy!
The best way to find out what can get you to orgasm is practice. Touch yourself in different places or have your partner touch you to see what drives you wild. For some women, sex toys are a great way to get started. Others just need to clear their head and relax. For more great tips, check out Choosing your first sex-toy and Give me an ‘O’.
Types of Orgasms
Believe it or not, women can have three types of orgasms (on top of being able to have multiple): clitoral, vaginal and blended.
- A clitoral orgasm is the most common type of orgasm and happens when the clitoris, which is part of the vulva and on the outside of the body, is stimulated (usually by rhythmic and consistent contact).
- A vaginal orgasm is when the G-Spot, a group of nerve endings an inch or two inside the vagina on your belly side, is stimulated. For all you need to know about the G-Spot, read Does the G-Spot Really Exist.
- A blended orgasm is a combination of vaginal and clitoral stimulation.
All three orgasms can feel different. The main difference is where you’re being stimulated.
