Pulling off neon makeup this spring

For those a little shy or not so confident in their makeup skills, this spring’s hot neon trend may be a bit intimidating. But pulling off the bright colours is not that difficult. Ready to take the plunge? Here’s how.

Bright, Technicolor shades have made a big comeback this season in makeup and fashion. And while you may think the cosmetics were simply for the runway, the bright neons are totally wearable in real life. Work up the nerve and take the risk, and we bet you’ll get compliments on your bold look. Here are some ways to try this hot trend.

Go with a singular neon product

You don’t need to apply neon from forehead to chin. Just try one pop of colour, and it’ll stand out. This way, you won’t have to worry about looking clownish.

Work up to a full application of the colour

Remember that the colour in the tube, pot or palette will always look more intense and bold than it will on your skin. That said, if you apply it and feel like it’s glowing insanely brightly on you, gradually work up to wearing the full-on colour. Take lipstick, for example: Dab it on with your finger and blot, and each day, gradually add more until you’re swiping it on to get the full effect. Essentially you’re training your eyes to get used to seeing your face with such a bright colour.

If it’s neon nails you want to try out, start with just one coat of polish before working up to two coats. When you’re ready to have your nails really pop with neon, apply a coat of opaque white nail polish first, then your two coats of colour.

For eyeshadow, use a wet eyebrow brush to apply a bold colour simply as a liner first (and just on the upper lash line). Then you work up to wearing the eyeshadow on your lids, and then later, smudged on your lower lash line too.

Wear your neon makeup with more neutral clothing

If you feel your bright makeup is giving you a glow-in-the-dark appearance, dress so that your outfit is more monochrome. Leave the season’s other hot trends (neons, bold florals and pastels) for another day, and opt for the muted greens and greys that are also in style this season. And, of course, you can never go wrong with a basic black outfit.
