Back-to-school fashion trends

Before you know it, it’ll be time to head back to class again. Here’s what to stock up on in your closet so your look is on trend.

It may seem like summer only just started, but it’s almost time to head back to school and hit the books again. And you know what that means — it’s time to finish back-to-school shopping. Your kids don’t need a whole new wardrobe, but investing in some of the season’s trends to incorporate with their basics will help keep their look current and fresh. Here are the trends to look for.

Bright colours

Dark colours, such as burgundy and forest green, tend to emerge in the fall season, but this year, the bold brights that were popular in the summer continue into fall. Think bright pinks and oranges, yellows and greens. Coloured denim too is something you can wear into fall. This includes the neon-colour pieces you picked up for summer. Layer that neon tank with a fitted blazer, or pull a chunky sweater over the flourescent skinny jeans you already have. Pick up some textured knits, and mix and match pieces that’ll inject a bit of the colour trend into your outfit.

Prints charming

Prints both small and large in scale will be a look all over the streets this fall. Pick up a cute polka dot cardigan from Old Navy, for example, and a shift dress in a larger, bolder print. You can even combine prints into one outfit, but for the fashion-shy at heart, you can stick to one print as a way to add more flair to an outfit.

Jazz up an outfit with some arm candy

A simple way to add some pizzazz to any outfit this fall is to sport an armful of bracelets. Mix and match different bangles, or slide on several friendship-style, woven-type bracelets; this will make any plain or conservative outfit much more interesting.

Dress up a fun T-shirt

Yes, the weather’s cooling, but you can still wear those T-shirts with graphic design elements that emerged this summer well into the fall by pairing them with a long, slouchy cardigan (they’ve got great ones at Aritzia), a denim jacket or a fitted blazer for a more polished look. These are pieces you can easily layer over your tees and blouses.
