Are you using concealer properly?

Most of us have concealer in our makeup bag, but are you using it properly? Concealer can hide blemishes and flaws, but draws attention to them when used incorrectly. Keep reading for tips on how concealer can become your new favourite makeup tool.

Let’s face it – most of us need to put in a bit of effort to achieve that fresh-faced, naturally beautiful look we see in magazines. The best way to accentuate the features of your face (and hide those imperfections) is to use a good concealer. You just need to know a few basics to achieve great results. Here are three ways you can use concealer to help you look your best.

Bye-bye dark circles

Those dark areas under your eyes aren’t doing you any favours. Whether they are hereditary or the result of a late night out, they make you look tired and older than you really are. Who needs that? To hide them choose a yellow-based creamy concealer in a shade lighter than your natural skin tone. Apply an eye cream first, to hydrate the thin skin in the under-eye area. Apply in thin layers with a brush, making sure to blend all the way to the lower lash line. If you have applied enough, the dark circles should disappear. If it looks cakey, apply more eye cream so that the area is properly moisturised.

Hide blemishes

When covering a blemish, use a concealer that matches your skin tone exactly. Using the same lighter shade of concealer you use for covering dark circles draws attention to a blemish. Make sure your moisturiser has had time to soak in, so that the concealer doesn’t slip off. Use a brush and apply with light strokes outward from the center of the blemish. Set the concealer with a light dusting of your face powder to keep it in place.

Eyelids and lips

Concealer makes a great base for your eyeshadow, and helps it last longer. If you don’t use eyeshadow, concealer used on your lids evens out the skin tone and brightens your eyes. You can also use it on your lips as a primer to keep lipstick from bleeding and make it longer-lasting.

Make concealer the first product you grab from your makeup bag — it may become your new best friend.
