5 Easy ways to boost the appearance of your skin

It’s easier than you think to put your best face forward and keep your complexion clear, healthy and glowing at any age. A few simple but effective changes are all you need to give your skin a noticeable boost.

1

Know your skin type

Knowing your skin type means you can buy and use the right products for what your skin needs. Dry skin needs products that hydrate, oily skin needs ingredients that keep shine at bay and pores clear, and combination skin needs something in between. Make sure your skin looks great by ensuring that what you put on it helps rather than worsens your complexion concerns.

2

Use sun smarts

You’ve heard it before, but we’re here to remind you again just how important it is to protect your skin from the sun. Not only are you at risk for skin cancer by skipping sunscreen before you head outdoors, but you’re speeding up the aging process. That’s right — fine lines and wrinkles will appear faster and often look more prominent when you don’t load up on SPF daily.

3

Exfoliate regularly

If exfoliation isn’t currently part of your skin care routine, it’s time to start (gently) scrubbing. Exfoliating once a week helps slough away dead skin cells that can clog pores and leave skin looking dull and drab. The result: skin that’s smoother, healthier and more even toned. Exfoliating also helps ensure the products you put on your skin (lotions, serums, etc.) penetrate more deeply and do what they’re supposed to do.

4

Stay hydrated

Think about how lousy you feel when you don’t drink enough water; now apply that same feeling to your skin. Sipping on coffee and soft drinks all day might keep you awake at your desk, but it does nothing for your skin. Stay hydrated to keep skin looking smooth and supple, not tight and dry. If you find plain water boring, add a squeeze of lemon or lime or several slices of cucumber to make things more interesting.

5

Wash the day away

We’ve all been guilty of getting home late and falling into bed without a trip to the sink to take off our makeup first. But sleeping with a face full of makeup is a serious skin no-no and one that can make it harder to keep your complexion healthy. Get your glow back by making a point to wash your face before bed — no matter how tired you feel. You’ll avoid potential breakouts or irritation that can stem from not removing makeup before you fall sleep.

Fess up!
