9 Reasons to have a winter wedding

Winter is becoming an increasingly popular time to get married, even if the weather is frightening. Here’s why you should book your wedding for the coldest time of the year.

1

Fairy-tale photo opportunities

Despite the sub-zero temperatures, there’s something magical about winter wedding photos. If you’re lucky enough to live where there’s been a huge dump of snow, then you can pose with snowmen, take close-ups of snowflakes in your hair, have snow fights with the bridal party and, once the photo shoot is done, head back to a toasty-warm reception venue.

2

Romantic ambiance

Imagine a cold winter’s evening; candlelight illuminates the reception venue, providing a warm glow, and an open fireplace crackles, providing a cozy atmosphere in which to mingle with your guests. You could even supply marshmallows so guests can toast them in the open flame.

3

Dare to be different

The options are endless if you don’t fancy being just another bride wearing a slim-cut, strapless dress. You could go old-century Victorian and team up your gown with those funky lace-up boots. Wear long white gloves, don a faux-fur coat, or imagine how alluring you’d look in a traditional gown, wearing a scarf and knitted hat!

4

Affordability

Traditionally most brides prefer to get married in warmer weather. Winter is the off-peak season for weddings, and with a bit of persuasion, you can generally talk reception venues into cutting you a special winter deal, particularly if you hold your wedding on a weekday.

Winter wedding themes

Winter wonderland
Snow-covered trees, lit up with zillions of tiny fairy lights, and a snow-covered aisle to the altar.

Ski resort
Ride the chairlift up to your ceremony, and have the bridal party ski back down to the reception venue.

Christmas
Use a colour palette of rich greens and reds for a Christmas feel. Arrive in a sleigh, and walk up the aisle to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

Narnia
In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lucy steps into the wardrobe and arrives in a snow-covered Narnia. Watch the movie for inspiration.

5

Availability

Those highly sought-after wedding venues are less likely to have a two-year waiting list for the winter months. Chances are you can secure a popular wedding venue for a fraction of the price and on the date of your choice.

6

‘Tis the season to be jolly

As it’s the festive season, most churches will already be gussied up with mistletoe, shiny baubles and Christmas decorations, saving you money on decking the halls with boughs of holly. Fa la la la la, la la la la.

7

Winter comfort food

Forget the rabbit food; think roast meat smothered with a rich sauce and crispy roasted potatoes with all the trimmings. Leave the tummy-trimming undergarments at home, and wear eating underwear (loose-fitting with an elastic waistband) under your bridal gown so there’s plenty of room for your stomach to expand after a pig-out.

8

Warm beverages

Mulled wine, hot toddies and warm cocoa are a twist on the traditional sparkling wines, cold beers and summer cocktails you are normally served at weddings.

9

Southern hemisphere honeymoon

You’ll be the envy of all your guests when they find out you’re jet-setting off to Australia or one of the Pacific islands for a summer honeymoon. Shedding all your winter layers, lazing on the beach and taking in the local sights are perfect ways to kick-start your married life.
