Fancy glossy, full hair at a fraction of salon prices? The secret to great hair could be closer than you think. In fact, it could be in your fridge.
If there was ever a time in your life when you ended up with beer in your hair, chances are you weren’t on the lookout for any unexpected volume and shine. But believe it or not, the yeasty brew is actually quite good for your locks. So good that a growing number of companies — including LUSH and Redken — are drinking up the trend.
But beer shampoo isn’t just a passing fashion fad. According to Julie Halkidis, Head of Hairdressing at The Australasian College Broadway there is some science behind it.
“On looking up the ingredients in beer we found that the protein in beer increases the hair’s volume while the sugars are said to strengthen the cuticle,” she says. “LUSH’s beer shampoo is made from 50% beer and according to their company’s product trainers it has all the functions of a normal shampoo but provides extra volume and silkiness.”
Perfect for unruly hair that tends to go frizzy in damp environments, beer shampoo will give your scalp with a boost and leave you with a shiny and glossy mane. So, how do you get the look without the price tag?
DIY beer shampoo
Supplies:
- 1 cup of beer
- 1/2 cup of shampoo
Instructions:
1. In a small saucepan, simmer the cup of beer over a medium heat until it has reduced by half.
2. Let the beer reduction cool slightly then mix it with the half-cup of your favourite shampoo. Any brand will do as the beer is providing all the extra goodness necessary for volume and shine.
3. Once the shampoo and beer is mixed together pour it into a bottle and keep it in the shower until you’re ready to use it. Shampoo and condition as normal. For an extra boost, rinse your hair with a bottle of flat beer followed by a short rinse of cool water. If you notice any residual smell, don’t panic — it will fade as your hair dries.
