Wedding season has officially started and that means the pressure is on to find the perfect hat. Still more focused on who wore the best fascinator over guests’ dresses, we love an excuse to don a hat.
Finding the right one to fit your face shape isn’t always easy but there are certain things to consider when shopping. Follow these simple rules and you’re bound to wow at your next round of “I do” celebrations.
Know when to take it off
Make sure you find something that fits you well and feels comfortable. Traditionally, one isn’t to remove their hat until the mother-of-the-bride takes hers off and, if she feels good in what she has chosen, that could be a number of hours (or until you sit down to eat at least) so, obvious as it might sound, make sure you put comfort before looks. Something might feel fabulous but if it hurts to wear it, or it’s too loose and you have to hold it on a windy day, you’re in for a long and uncomfortable wedding celebration.
Try a Fascinator
If you aren’t sure about wearing a hat, try a Fascinator. All the rage these days, Fascinators (smaller head pieces that attach like a hair piece) are an en vogue alternative. Currently available in every colour, shape, size and design, these are a really fun way of honouring the tradition of hat-wearing without actually wearing a hat.
Get measured
Get yourself sized up properly. Whether you opt up-market for a Philip Treacy headpiece or have something made for yourself, take the time to visit a milliner and get your head measured accurately so you buy the perfectly fitting hat. And if you aren’t sure how to wear your hair with a hat, book yourself in with a hairdresser who can design your hair around the hat.
Don’t overdo it
Hats are wonderful ways to make a statement but a wedding isn’t necessarily the time to do that. Make sure you don’t upstage the bride, groom or any immediate members of their family. You wouldn’t wear a white dress to a wedding so think fun and fabulous without being too showy when hat buying. The horse races or Royal celebrations are times to go loud, a wedding is not, so opt for something subtle, chic and respectful. You’ll look stunning without making yourself the talk of the after-wedding party.
