Robin Roberts: Weak body, strong mind

Good Morning America host Robin Roberts may be down, but don’t count her out just yet. The anchor gave fans a health update today and she’s coming out fighting.

Robin Roberts is fighting myelodysplastic syndrome — and fighting really is the right term. The Good Morning America anchor just lost her mother and now is undergoing chemo and radiation in preparation for a bone marrow transplant to replace that damaged by the disease.

In a blog post on the GMA website today, Roberts wrote:

“Last Sunday to lift my spirits I threw a little party at my apartment for my GMA family. The next morning I walked through the hospital doors, with my guardian angels — mom and dad — back together and blazing a trail ahead of me.”

“The start of last week went well but the daily chemo/treatment caught up to me by the weekend. My body is so weak but not my mind. YOU give me the courage to keep going.

“So today is my last day of chemo… Wednesday is called a day of rest, yay, right! The transplant is scheduled for Thursday morning.

“Bless you & Onward!”

MDS often arises as the result of chemotherapy for other cancers — “as it did as a result of Robin’s successful breast cancer treatment,” said GMA‘s chief health and medical editor Richard Besser. Roberts fought breast cancer in 2007 and won, only to be faced with this new battle.

While her mom and dad may be watching over her from above, she has a real-life angel by her side here on earth: her sister Sally, who is her bone marrow donor.
