Summer hair care from sun up to sun down

Everyone loves the beauty of summer — the beach, the sun, the pool. But spending so much time in the water and sun can do serious damage to your hair, leaving it looking less than gorgeous. Find out how to protect, nourish and restore your locks.

Before you leave the house

Christopher Padula of The Beauty Parlour in Hoboken, New Jersey took some time out to share with us some amazing beauty tips on how to keep your hair looking its best this summer.

“Before you head out for the day, dampen your hair at home and put on a quality leave-in conditioner. By filling your hair’s cuticle with the leave-in, you are leaving less room for your hair to absorb an excess of salt water and/or chlorine.”

When dealing with the sun, most quality leave-in conditioners have UV protectors in them. Padula says, “While there are lots of good products out there, I recommend L’Oreal Serie Expert Absolute Repair.” (Amazon Prime, $20) You simply massage this cream into your towel-dried hair after shampooing and leave it in to do its work.

If you don’t like using a leave-in, try a spray instead. You can protect your hair with products like Kerastase’s Huile Celeste and Aqua-Seal protective sprays that limit damage caused by sun, chlorine and salt water.

Get it twisted

Styling your hair in cute braids or even simple ponytail can limit the amount of hair that’s exposed to sunlight.

Thanks to Pinterest and YouTube, braiding your hair got a whole lot easier. You can find tutorials for every type of braid — from classic French braids to a single side braid. We have some terrific tutorials right here at SheKnows too:

Protect and nourish

In the summertime, hats and headscarves are your friends. They can protect your hair and scalp from the sun — and they look cute too. When swimming, consider wearing a swim cap.

When you get out of the water, rinse your hair as soon as possible and run cool water through your hair for at least five minutes.

After a long day at the beach, coat your hair with a deep-conditioning treatment that nourish and hydrate your hair. Frédéric Fekkai Summer Hair After Sun Daily Mask (Nordstrom, $25) is an amazing product that conditions, detangles and refreshes your hair.

Quick tip

Some women swear by adding a little coconut oil and shea butter to their hair before diving in the water to create a barrier. This way, your porous, dry hair won’t soak in all the damaging chlorine (or salt water).
