NYC Fashion Week begins: Will it be mod, collarless and fitted… or full of surprises?

Before we dive into fashion, I just want to say that I’m so happy to be covering New York Fashion Week!

Lights, Camera, Action! NY Fashion Week has begun!
There’s always such a buzz during this time of the year and this season promises to have lots of nice surprises. It’s these unexpected moments that make Fashion Week worth watching, so I hope you’ll click over often because I plan to be updating several times a day to keep you up-to-the-minute with what’s happening on the runways.
Designer Rachel Roy showed her line on January 31 Fashion Week in New York officially begins today, but things are already hopping in New York. Rachel Roy just showed her latest line in her skylit art-filled studio on Wednesday to rave reviews. Her beautiful and ladylike designs are now being compared with designer heavyweights like Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera. I love how her clothes continue to evolve with wonderful new details. The Rachel Roy piece that will garner the most editorial is likely to be her increasingly iconic trench. It’s always dangerous to make predictions, but based on the couture shows in Paris last week, here are some of the trends we may see on the runways the coming days:
 

1) Hourglass dresses with nipped-in waists plus lots of late 30s glam detailing like the pockets and plackets seen in Jean Paul Gaultier’s newest collection. Christian Dior followed this trend as well with an Asian/New Look fusion that featured nipped-in waists galore. Chanel and even Armani (!) also followed the body-conscious trend with fitted dresses.
 

2) 60s pop art colors and mod inspiration were also strong on the runways last week in Paris. Gaultier and Lacroix showed plenty of yellow and fuscia. Black and white was EVERYWHERE at the Chanel, Valentino, and Armani Prive shows, not to mention those ubiquitous black opaque tights on every model in the gargantuan Chanel show.
 

3) Collarless jackets and coats were a big sensation in Paris. The Armani Prive jackets caused a stir and the editorial favorite at Valentino was a collarless pale sugar pink princess coat, intimating more of the same to follow. Twinkle: Fiercely loved by the DIY community, she just put out a new book (twinkle’s big city knits), and who’s not a sucker for her knits? Costello Tagliapietra: These guys can drape! Temperley London: From the beginning, she’s always done beautiful shimmering must-have party dresses. Matthew WilliamsonAlways Fab:Matthew Williamson: His jet set cult following is loyal because he always delivers Tracy Reese: Expect fabulous prints and patterns.
