Friday’s Fashion Fails: Maggie Gyllenhaal and Zosia Mamet

Oops… even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We’re telling you why Maggie Gyllenhaal and Zosia Mamet‘s fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars’ sartorial slip ups!

Maggie Gyllenhaal

What’s black and white and blah all over? Why, that’d be the dress Maggie Gyllenhaal wore to the White House Down premiere in NYC. The mom of two chose this Christian Dior creation from the fall 2013 collection for the evening and we’re not giving it a presidential pardon.

Although black and white mod is a good combination for summer, the execution of this dress doesn’t work below the waist. The strapless top is fine and suited for Maggie’s slim frame, but what’s with the peplum piece? It looks more like a muff you’d use to keep your hands warm in the winter. The knit fabric seems off season to wear in the summer.

The chunky contrasting pattern on the bottom of the dress is OK, but the strange tea length hemline isn’t. Cutting a dress off at mid-calf isn’t flattering to anyone, and this could have been improved by raising the hem to her knees.

The final verdict? With a few tweaks, like losing the peplum and raising the skirt’s length, Maggie could turn this Dior from a don’t to a do.

Zosia Mamet

She plays Shoshanna, the most conservative character on HBO’s Girls, but in real-life, it seems Zosia Mamet is trying out an edgier look… like not wearing pants to a movie premiere! The actress hit The Heat premiere in this very short mini dress that looks like a T-shirt.

It’s a good thing Zosia’s not in high school because this super short hemline definitely doesn’t pass the fingertip test! Besides the fact that we think the dress is simply too short, the color and baggy cut on this frock are boring as well. And is she really wearing flats to a red carpet movie premiere? This entire look is too casual.

There are a few ways Zosia could improve her mini dress mess. If she really wanted to wear this white number, she should add a colorful belt to cinch in her waist and a pair of bright or patterned shorts to avoid a possible wardrobe malfunction. We’d also ditch the flats for some wedges or neon heels to add some extra oomph.

The final verdict? If you’re trying for a more mature look, this is not the way to do it. Take a page from your costar Allison Williams‘ wardrobe, who has totally nailed the art of dressing sexy yet stylishly for red carpet occasions.
