If you’re an apple shape, try these style tips from an expert to help highlight your body’s best features.
Apple shapes carry extra weight in the stomach area but are smaller (or even skinny) on the top and bottom, often despite exercise and diet. The shape is extremely frustrating for women who are self-conscious about their tummies, and is especially common in pre- and postnatal women.
Lift & tuck.
Erica Strama, fashion expert and senior marketing manager for the Shops at North Bridge on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, recommends getting fitted for a great bra and purchasing some shapewear (such as Spanx) before you don any tops. This will help to keep your breasts lifted and the tummy smooth. Once you have all your body parts in place, it’s easier to pick tops.
Don’t be clingy.
Strama suggests wearing clothes that don’t cling to the midriff area. Jersey materials and silks don’t work well with the apple shape. “You want to disguise problem areas, not draw attention to them.” She adds, “Patterns and textures help camouflage the weight in certain areas and are on trend for fall.”
It’s all about the a-line.
Strama also recommends a great A-line dress. “Throw on a blazer to complete any look and hide problem areas,” she adds. Shorter hemlines show off toned legs and help draw attention away from the stomach.
