Nails took center stage right alongside the fashion at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. Nails are always a big part of the overall look as brands get to debut their newest shades in store for the next season. Artists get to be super creative and we start to see what trends will emerge as the go-to colors slowly creep onto our radar for next season.
Designer collaborations
Sally Hansen teamed up with Prabal Gurung and Alexander Wang for new shades within their Complete Manicure line. Each shade was created with the designers’ fashion shows and inspirations in mind. Gilded Lily from Prabal Gurung matched a gold sequined fabric perfectly while the pale neutrals of Wang complemented his show’s urban palette. The brand is also continuing its longtime partnership with Tracy Reese.
Most unusual
The nail techs and designers get to let their imaginations run wild backstage and they cooked up some amazing looks. We’re particularly in love with the nails at Gretchen Jones (left) where Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics created a nail to mimic the look of a turquoise stone in keeping with the overall theme of the show. At Joy Cioci (right) there was a fishnet overlay tip up by CND and even MAC got into to the game, with senior makeup artist Keri Blair custom designing nail looks for several shows this year, including a velvet flecked look in several shades at Ruffian.
The trends
Look for the nude nail to be the look of fall once again. At Alexander Wang, the Sally Hansen shade called Bandage, a pale nude, was the one the editors were picking as their favorite. Other nudes heading down the runway were Essie’s Jazz (left), done by Haven Spa at the EDUN show, Essie’s Glamour Purse at Richard Chai Love and at Derek Lam, nail guru Jin Soon Choi applied Estée Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Nude Attitude.
Blue is also not going anywhere. Deep versions of the shade turned up at Prabal Gurung in his Sally Hansen collaboration color Blue Rose, while CND used Midnight Sapphire at Karen Walker (right) and the almost black shade of blue, Inkwell, at Wes Gordon.
