Backstage beauty trends at New York Fashion Week

What looks will you be sporting this fall? The runways at Fashion Week are a really good indicator — and we’ve got the backstage beauty report with some of the hottest trends that went down the runway.

The backstage area at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week is where the magic happens. Models are transformed by makeup, hair and nail artists. It’s the place where the trends for the next season begin to emerge. So what will be hot for fall? Let’s take a look.

The low ponytail

This easy but simply elegant look was seen all over the runways. Aveda did messy ones at Sophie Theallet (left) and Tibi, while Wella went super sleek at DKNY. Redken created versions of this look for Diesel, Ports 1961, Ralph Lauren (middle), Calvin Klein and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

To get the low pony at Marc by Marc Jacobs (right), Redken creative consultant Guido gives us these tips:

  • Apply Redken satinwear 02 ultimate blow-dry lotion to damp hair and blow-dry straight.
  • Create a deep left side part and with your fingers, pull the hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck.
  • Tuck hair behind the ears.
  • Apply Redken outshine 01 anti-frizz polishing milk to the ponytail for lasting smoothness and a sleek finished look.

The red lip

Bold red lips are a trend we see fairly often and this season was no exception. Red went down many runways including Monique Lhuillier, Michael Kors, Bibhu Mohapatra and Ruffian, where MAC re-introduced Ruffian Red lipstick (left), which will make its return in a collection this June. At Thakoon (middle), NARS applied their Heatwave shade while at Imitation of Christ, NYX cosmetics (right), in their first appearance at Fashion Week, went with their matte lipstick in Alabama.

Blue eyeshadow

Blue eyeshadow made quite a few unexpected appearances backstage usually in bold, rich shades. MAC applied it bright and heavy at Prabal Gurung and also at Jason Wu (left) while at Costello Tagliapietra, (middle) they went with a medium blue along the lashline from a new cream eyeshadow palette called Delft that will debut in the fall. At LAMB , Maybelline (right) made the eyes pop with an allover application of Master Drama by Eyestudio Cream Pencil in Sapphire Strength.

Nude nails

Nude nails were everywhere a couple of seasons ago and they are back again in a big way. Nails went pale at Marc by Marc Jacobs with Zoya’s Adele, and at Lela Rose it was essie’s Case Study. More nude nail looks from sheer beige to putty shades were seen at Alexander Wang, EDUN, Richard Chai Love , Derek Lam, Preen, M.Patmos and DKNY.
