Are you and your makeup ready for summer? Bring out those flirty skirts, linen tops and bikinis and let’s pair them with makeup that won’t melt. So banish the gloppy lipstick, bury the heavy foundation and slippery eyeliner — let’s lighten up!
Heat and humidity can cause some real makeup challenges and as a makeup artist and founder of an indie cosmetics company, Three Custom Color Specialists, my clients want to know my tricks of the trade. Here are a few especially for you!
Fresh face
Have you ever tried a primer? You won’t regret it. It helps to hold your makeup on all day, grabs foundation and gives the appearance of a flawless finish by diminishing fine lines, wrinkles and discoloration. Makeup primers also keep oil at bay, providing a smooth canvas for your foundation to stick to. It only takes a moment to apply and is meant to go on after your favorite moisturizer (with sunscreen please!) and before your foundation. One of the very best is L’Oreal Paris’ Magic Perfecting Base ($6).
Lighten the load
If you choose to forgo foundation, why not opt for a tinted moisturizer? Be sure to choose one with SPF that is a shade darker than your skin tone and blend it all over your face. The texture is lighter than foundation and will help to even out your skin tone. Clinique has a few great shade options in their Moisture Surge tinted moisturizer collection ($26 each).
Go bold
Bold brows, lips and eyeliner are all trends this summer but please, not all at once. Stick to one of your favorites. Bright lip color is pretty and exciting, so pick a stunning fuchsia like Bora Bora by Three Custom Color Specialists ($22) or vibrant coral like Chanel Paradis ($33). Pair this look with a softer eye as you want all the focus on the lips. Simple, elegant brown or black eyeliner and mascara is all you’ll need. For longer wear, a waterproof liner is a must, which is great for the beach or by the pool. Try Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eyeliner ($22). They have a bunch of fun colors too!
Bronze it up
Fake it with self-tanner anywhere on the face and body, but be sure to exfoliate as needed and blend, blend, blend. You can “tan” gradually which is a terrific, easy way to build the perfect shade. One of my favorites is by Jergens. They have a few to choose from, but be sure to pick one with SPF to protect that skin! When using a facial powder bronzer, don’t forget to sweep a little onto your neck and earlobes, especially if you have a ponytail or shorter hair. A terrific option is Three Custom Color Specialists’ Powder Bronzer ($40).
Have a great summer and don’t be afraid to play with fun, bright color!
