Plus-size designer Eden Miller makes history at NYFW

Designer Eden Miller is making serious history with her spring/summer 2014 collection at New York Fashion Week: She’s the first plus-size designer to show her collection at the Lincoln Center tents!

What do ModCloth, ASOS, Torrid,  Forever 21 and H&M have in common?

They’re all mainstream retailers that have embraced plus-sized designs — and customers are snapping up the stylish looks as soon as they hit the shelves. There’s definitely a market for plus-size fashion, but the runways of New York Fashion Week have shied away from showcasing designers with plus-size lines.

Until now, that is.

Cabiria designer Eden Miller made history on Friday by becoming the first plus-size designer to show during the Fashion Law Institute presentation at Lincoln Center. Even better? NYFW organizers weren’t specifically looking for a plus-size line to feature when they chose her spring/summer 2014 collection.

“It just happened to be that they liked my stuff,” Miller told Fashionista.com. “It’s not an indie showcase, it’s not these indie designers trying to make a scene or some punk kid coming in trying to be an upstart.”

And she deserves it. The designer routinely creates pieces — like the one shown here from her spring/summer 2013 collection — that are both beautiful and tailored to fit any woman’s body.

Miller tapped some plus-sized models to walk the runway during her show, including well-known faces like Frances Cordova and Victoria Lee.

“Right before the beginning of the show someone reminded us that we were making history. That’s when it actually hit me,” Cordova told Yahoo! Shine of the groundbreaking experience. “The fact that we were the first plus-size women at the tent show is so exciting.”

Miller hopes that eventually the distinction between plus-size and “traditional” fashion shows will disappear.

“I’m hoping it becomes a non-issue,” she told Fashionista. “I hope that it’s a beautiful show. I mean, I’ll be happy to get press coverage… but I’m really hoping that it’s seen just as the other offerings at fashion week.”
