An LBD just wouldn’t cut it for the launch party of the much anticipated Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty retrospective — and the guests didn’t disappoint with their fashion choices. It was all about the drama at the Victoria and Albert Museum last night.
Fashion blogger Susie Lau created a gothic bride look, complete with a veil over her face. Actress Salma Hayek was striking in a strapless gown with full ruffled skirt and black lace peacock detail, paired with cut out heels. Model Erin O’Connor, who stars in the retrospective of the late designer’s work, stunned in a floor-length gown with a plunging, silk-embellished neckline.

Kate Moss, the star of the retrospective — her 3D holographic image takes pride of place — turned up with husband Jamie Hince in an eye-catching lace high-neck McQueen gown, worn over a black bodysuit and paired with strappy heels. Fellow guests Lady Mary Charteris and Poppy Delevignge went for similar revealing lace ensembles.

Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie chose a voluminous, high-neck mustard yellow velvet dress for the event, while Olympic athlete Aimee Mullins also gave a nod to the velvet trend with her long dark green and bronze velvet gown. Naomi Campbell wore a dramatic dress with a sheer top with floral detailing and a ruffled black skirt, teamed with a small furry jacket draped over one shoulder.

Victoria Beckham was one of the few attendees not to wear McQueen, choosing a strapless black dress of her own creation, which had an edgy look thanks to the triangular cut out detailing on the skirt. Model Annabelle Neilson went for a plunging ruffled monochrome gown. But it was singer FKA Twigs who really stole the show in an amazing feathered creation from McQueen’s Spring/Summer 2008 collection.

The exhibition of McQueen’s finest work is finally on the British-born designer’s home turf after originally being shown at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. From Saturday, March 14, 240 of McQueen’s creations will be available to see at the V&A, including dresses made from feather and hand painted glass, lace-covered antlers and embroidered kimonos.
His signature “Armadillo” shoes are featured, as are a number of headdresses by his friend and long-time collaborator Philip Treacey.
