Makeup tips and trends for fall

When the weather cools down, makeup tends to get a little heavier and darker. At the end of summer, many women switch from the natural look to something a little more polished. Here are some hot tips and trends for fall makeup.

Gold and earth tones

Earth tones are always popular for fall. Eye shadows in shades of brown and green will be very trendy this season. However, we will also be seeing a lot more gold.

For daytime, choose gold eye shadow that is matte and save the shimmery colors for evening. Gold isn’t just for eye shadow though. Gold nail polish is also a top choice.

Berry makeup

One of the hottest trends in makeup this fall is using berry colors for lips and nails, along with purple eye shadows. Fabulous makeup artist Amy B. demonstrates how to perfect this look in this video. The makeup she uses in the video includes:

  • Rimmel London off white eyeshadow as base
  • Mac Bare Canvas Paint
  • Stila eyeshadow in “Moonlight”
  • Stila duo in “Dragonfly”
  • Stila kajal pencil in “Amethyst”
  • Lancome Virtuose Mascara
  • Napoleon Perdis black eye pencil
  • Mac “Iris Eyes” fluidline
  • Mac “Violet” pigment
  • Napoleon Perdis Barely Rouge
  • Revlon Colorstay lip pencil in “Wine”
  • Max Factor Lipfinity in “Frivolous”

Smokey purple eyes

Smokey eyes makeup will be very trendy this fall and winter for a dramatic evening look. Instead of using the black and dark blue used in smokey eyes of the past, experiment with purples this season to create this look.

  1. Prep your eyelids with primer to be sure your makeup lasts. Apply primer from the lash line to the brow bone before applying any shadow.
  2. Line your upper lashes with a dark liner. Deep purple or dark charcoal in liquid or gel form work well. Line your upper lash line making the line a bit thicker in the center of the eye compared to the edges.
  3. Apply a lighter liner to your lower lash line. Use an eye pencil, powder liner or eye shadow applied with a tiny brush. Pick a lighter hue but similar color to the liner used on the upper lash line.
  4. Add a light eyeshadow such as pale purple to your eyelid from the lashes to the crease. Select a darker shade of purple eye shadow and apply directly into the crease.
  5. Dip your eye shadow brush into the dark color and apply it gently over your eyeliner and then blend upward. Use a very small amount of shadow at first and blend carefully toward the crease. Continue applying more dark shadow until you get the desired smokey effect. You can apply a lighter color of purple or berry from the crease to the brow bone for extra drama.
  6. Use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes. Apply two coats of black mascara. With all the attention on your eyes, you don’t need much more makeup. A rosy blush and glossy pink lipstick completes the look.

    Natural beauty

If you aren’t into heavy makeup, don’t worry. The natural look will still be popular for fall. Don’t overpluck your brows. They should be groomed without been too bushy or too thin. Light lipstick and gloss in peach, pink and brown are nice choices.

For eyeliner, skip black and instead use a thin line of grey or brown eye liner for everyday. Apply a light cheek color on the apples of your cheeks and then a slightly darker shade in the hallow area under your cheekbones for a more contoured effect.
