How to wear white in winter

Wearing white in winter has a bad rap but it’s not always warranted. Fashion experts Carla Nemiroff and Rachel Fauman give tips and picks on winter white.

Wearing white in winter is often thought of as out of bounds but when done properly it can be a huge boon. We got the scoop from wardrobe consultant Carla Nemiroff and image consultant Rachel Fauman.

Not forbidden

Winter white has a bad name but much of it is without cause. “Winter white is often thought of as taboo since we associated not being able to wear white after Labor Day” says Fauman. “In truth really what we can’t wear after Labor Day are things like white linen pants.”

That said, there is one thing that is off limits in winter: Nemiroff says the no white shoes after Labor Day rule does apply.

Fabric is key

Both Fauman and Nemiroff agree that when it comes to wearing white in the winter, the fabric of the garment is integral. “In order to wear white in winter well remember that the fabric matters as much as the color,” explains Fauman. “You would never wear white wool pants in the summer but of course you would wear them in the winter.” So what fabrics are a go? Nemiroff suggests wool, cotton, satin and silk.

Mix and match

With white in winter, there definitely can be too much of a good thing. The experts both emphasized the need to pair white items with garments of other colors. “There is a difference between an accent of white and looking like a snow queen,” says Nemiroff.

Surefire picks

Looking for some winter white items for your wardrobe? Nemiroff suggests the following:

  • White sweater: “With a great pair of jeans and boots you’ll brighten up the room.”(Design History sweater available at BlueFly)
  • White coat: “A white coat is the ultimate winter white accent: it is unexpected yet refreshingly cheerful.” (Coat by Kenneth Cole New York)
  • White handbag: “This will act as a neutral and will match everything.” (Dior handbag available at eLuxury)
