As the year is winding down, let’s look at some of the hottest fashion trends of 2008. Some of them will stay hot in the new year, while others will thankfully fade away.
Each December, it’s always fun to take a look back at the fashions from the year. Which ones were mistakes and which ones are here to stay? Here we discuss some of the top fashion trends of 2008 and what to expect in fashion in 2009.
The maxi dress
Maybe it’s all Angelina Jolie’s fault, I’m not sure. But in the spring and summer 2008, you couldn’t turn the corner without seeing a maxi dress. No matter how comfortable they might be, the maxi dress doesn’t flatter anyone. Though it’s a fine choice in maternity fashion, the maxi dress shouldn’t be an option if you aren’t pregnant. Fortunately it looks like dresses will be a lot shorter and more form-fitting come spring 2009. Look for wrap dresses and shirt dresses to replace the maxi dress at the head of the class in 2009.
Geeky glasses
Geek-chic has never been hotter. Even if you don’t wear prescription lenses, geeky, dark rimmed glasses are hip. This trend has been growing in popularity for the past few years and will continue to be trendy in 2009. Other geeky trends include handbags that double as laptop bags, colorful skins for your iPhone and other gadgets, and anything plaid.
Gladiator sandals
Probably the most popular shoes of the spring and summer were gladiator sandals. With heel heels and far too many straps, many of these sandals went up to the knee. This is a trend I had hoped would die, but many top designers are featuring gladiator sandals once again in their new collections for 2009. If you want to wear this trend, keep them simple and neutral like this pair of gladiator sandals from the Jimmy Choo Resort 2009 collection.
Baggy boyfriend jeans
This bad fashion trend definitely falls on the shoulders (or should I say hips) of Katie Holmes. Wearing baggy, oversized jeans and rolling up the cuffs is simply silly. Women should be proud of their curves, not hiding them under baggy denim. If you love jeans, pull on a pair of skinny jeans instead.
Ruffled blouses
Femininity was back in a big way in the latter months of 2008 with ruffled blouses at the forefront. Paired with pencil skirts or sleek pants, frilly, ruffled tops are popular for work attire and weekend wear. Into the spring, look for more ruffled tops of the sleevelesss variety. Instead of white, consider both pastel and bright colored ruffled blouses in 2009. Pair them with grey, camel and other neutrals.
Shooties
It’s not a shoe. It’s not a bootie. It’s a shootie! And they are everywhere. Particularly oxford style shooties were very popular in the fall months of 2008. Shooties, when worn occasionally, can be a great addition to your wardrobe. Like with most trends, just don’t over do it. With menswear-inspired oxfords, couple them with a ruffled blouse for a nice contrast in style.
Bangs
Not exactly a fashion trend, but definitely worth mentioning, are bangs. Celebrities from Tyra Banks and Katie Holmes to Mischa Barton and Reese Witherspoon were wearing bangs in 2008. Whether you like them thick or blunt, choppy or sideswept, bangs will continue to be popular in the new year. Not everyone looks great in every style of bangs, so experiment a little if you are trying bangs for the first time. Wispy, sideswept bags are less harsh than bold, blunt bangs. Whatever you do, don’t cut them too short. Bangs in the middle of the forehead aren’t a good look for anyone. For all the latest celebrity hairstyles and hair tips, visit Celeb Salon.
