Update your look for summer

Casual, flowing dresses and other fashion trends made for the comfort of summer heat make the summer months the easiest, most appealing season to update your style. Most importantly, this is the season of travel so a look that is stylish and comfortable is more than ideal. We all want to bring our style to the next level but how we do that can be a challenging task without a few pointers. We consulted David A. McKnight, certified image consultant and owner of DAMStyle and got some great advice to get you started on a summer friendly wardrobe.

8 tips to keep up with summer fashion

Make a statement

Add a statement necklace or bold jewelry to any outfit. Forget the old adage that less is more. It isn’t!

Cinch it

Cinch your waist with a big belt. You can add a belt to almost any shirt or blazer.

Go nude

Nude hues are the way to go. Nude looks great in a sandal or a purse, but whatever you do, don’t make everything nude. You do need color somewhere to make you stand out.

Coral is hot

Speaking of color, coral is the go to summer hue. We recommend doing blocks of color. For example, try a gray boyfriend blazer with a coral boat neck top, skinny white jeans, and black sandals.

Fringe is in

Fringe is experiencing a second coming. The trend may be too much for some girls to wear as a dress for the fear of looking like she’s from the 1920s, but it can be easily incorporate into an outfit on shoes or a purse.

Go girly other ways this summer: Bows, lace and ruffles

Ripped denim

A popular fad of the ’80s, ripped denim has made a huge comeback.  So take those old jeans that you never wear and shred them in all the right places.

Boyfriend jeans

Many girls are breathing a sign of relief because they now have a fashionable alternative to the tight skinny jean. Boyfriend jeans are bigger, baggier, looser fitting and most of all, they’re extremely comfy.

Gorgeous gladiators

Gladiator shoes made an entrance last spring, and it looks like they have staying power. This spring and summer, gladiators are the queen of all shoes. Try them as a wedge, a jelly, or a stiletto. Whatever the occasion, I’m sure there is a gladiator that will work.

Don’t forget those shades

Whether it’s protecting ourselves from the sun or showing the crowd we are too cool for school, the right sunglasses are super crucial.

A final word

“This season’s looks are all about making a statement as we see trends move toward bold shapes, bright colors, embellished glasses, and oversized frames,” said Eden Wexler, Director of Public Relations for Solstice Sunglass Boutique. “More specifically, there’s a real return to retro — with vintage styling from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s taking center stage. The U.S. relaunch of Carrera sunglasses from the 80s are particularly exciting and celebrities like Rihanna, T.I., Usher, Kanye West, Ne-Yo and Gwen Stefani are all sporting them.”
