Pretty poncho
On the runways of Fall/Winter Fashion Week, we saw models from 3.1 Phillip Lim, Zac Posen and several other designers strutting their stuff in unique ponchos. Ponchos come in every color and fabric imaginable, from classic tweeds to fluffy faux fur. For a minimalist look, wear a dark charcoal grey poncho over everything from a turtleneck and skinny jeans to a simple cocktail dress.
Dramatic cape
Capes aren’t just for vampires and the opera anymore: You can wear a dramatic cape just about anywhere. Capes are the sibling garment to the poncho. While both are typically sleeveless, ponchos have a hole and slip over the head; capes drape over the shoulders are fasten around the neck. Some designers add sleeves to capes for comfort and practicality. For evening, consider a velvet- or fur-trimmed cashmere cape. Keep your body type in mind when choosing a poncho or cape. If you are short, your outerwear should also be short. Too long, and you’ll lose yourself in it and appear even shorter. Pear-shaped or plus-size women should consider a belted poncho or cape to create a defined waist.
Puffer jacket
Puffer jackets are still a hot choice this season. Though they aren’t figure flattering, they are certainly cozy and warm. Look for puffer jackets in metallics and bold colors such as purple and fuchsia. Some designers, such as Cynthia Rowley, have created puffer accessories including puffy scarves and gloves.
Velvet trench
The trench coat gets a luxe upgrade for winter in velvet. The Jane Post velvet trench pictured here is a Neiman Marcus exclusive. It features deep red velvet and a leopard print lining, taking the classic trench from drab to fab. The slightly flared silhouette provides a fabulous fit.
Oversized peacoat
The peacoat is a classic choice that is on trend every winter. This season, look for peacoats with longer, fuller shapes. Peacoats that hit mid-thigh and allow a little room to move are trendy and practical. If you still like the classic shape of the traditional double-breasted peacoat, experiment with color. Hot pink and bright yellow are fun choices that add a punch of color to dark winter fashions.
