How to get Natalie Portman’s loose waves

Natalie Portman was visiting the Late Show With David Letterman in New York City on Monday, November 22, 2010, looking as beautiful as ever. Natalie’s loose, wavy hairstyle is soft and sophisticated. To get the look, you need a curling iron and a little bit of time.

Protect your hair

Starting with dry hair, protect it by spritzing with a heat protecting spray all over. This will reduce any heat damage from the curling iron. Separate you hair into workable sections and pin up the top layers, so that you can work with the layers underneath.

Use a big barrel curling iron

Heat a big barrel (2-inch) curling iron on high heat. Hold the curling iron vertically (perpendicular to the floor) and wrap a piece of one of the bottom layers of your hair around the iron. You should be wrapping the hair around the iron, not clamping the hair and rolling the iron. Don’t wrap it all the way to the root — you want the waves to be long and loose. After 30 seconds, release your hair from the iron and let the wave sit. Don’t touch it.

Repeat all over your head

Repeat creating waves throughout the bottom layer of your hair. Then start releasing the hair that you pinned up, and finish by creating waves in the top layer.

Flip it and set it

Flip your head upside down and gently run your hands through your hair to loosen the curls into nice waves. Flip your head back right-side up and then adjust your hair how you like it. Finish by spritzing holding spray allover to keep your style in place. Don’t overdo it on the spray — this is a natural look, not a stiff one.
