Welcome to Pretty Little Things, where each week we bring you our picks for the prettiest little things online. If we love it, you’ll be the first to know! This week we take a look at what to wear as the mercury rises.
Hot, hot heat
Now that we’re firmly rooted in summer and sweat is a permanent accessory whether we like it or not, it’s officially time to make a few necessary style adjustments to account for the heat and humidity. As much as I love summer, I hate feeling like my clothes are sticking to me. Plus walking around in something overly structured when it’s hot enough to fry eggs on the sidewalk is never a good idea. So before we’re all back in layers, hats and mittens, I put together some heat-appropriate looks for days when the temperature soars.
Forever floral
I have to admit, I was pretty slow to jump on the playsuit bandwagon. Being petite, I feared wearing one would just make me look like a big kid. Cameron Diaz can pull off a playsuit because she has legs that go on for miles, but on me – that I had doubts about. However, since trying a few, I’ve changed my tune and this pretty strappy floral style (Top Shop, $95) is perfect for looking chic on super-hot days. I’ll be pairing mine with platforms and a cropped denim jacket (should it cool off).
So stripy
Tank tops are a warm weather must for their versatility and the fact they’re one of the easiest things to wear in the summer if you want to beat the heat. I love this navy and light pink striped style (Net-a-Porter.com, $78) with timeless Breton stripes, scoop neck and racer back. Perfect for pairing with denim cut offs, strappy sandals and a statement bag in a bright and cheerful hue.
Sweet studs
For days when the heat starts to take its toll, all I want to wear (other than a bikini, which is unfortunately not acceptable everyday attire) is a sundress. Since I have a closet full of them, I’ve been in the market for something a little different, which is why this swingy style with a studded top (Urban Outfitters, $79) caught my eye. Lightweight and easy to wear, this eye-catching look comes in yellow, blue, light red and peach.
Sexy open shoulder
Light and airy are the two most important factors when it comes to hot weather fashion. Without them you’re left feeling and looking overheated and sticky. So when I spotted this loose open shoulder tunic (Revolve Clothing, $59) in dark gray, I was immediately smitten. The scoop neck, raw cut edges and overall laid back look of this piece make it a summer style must.
Stylish snake print
Everyone from Kate Hudson to Zoe Saldana to Jennifer Lopez has embraced snake print as a summer style staple, so when I spied this light and lovely ruffled dress (Shoptrendboutique.com, $189) in pretty python print, I knew I’d hit on something worth adding to my roster of hot weather looks. I love the feminine ruffles and low-cut back and will be pulling this out whenever I need to look hot – in the heat.
Airy fairy
Skirts are another summer staple, but they don’t have to be micro mini to keep me cool. I really like the bohemian vibe or this mid-length free flowing skirt (J.Crew, $88) that comes in pewter, rich purple and dusty clay – a soft peachy-rose. I’m partial to the pewter for versatility and will be pairing this simple skirt with gladiator sandals, a cream-colored tank and a wide-brimmed sun hat.
