Tips for wearing kimono sleeves

Kimono sleeves are showing up everywhere, on every style of clothing from the dress to the shrug, sweater and even the coat. They have transformed from the traditional long kimono sleeve to three-quarter-length and short sleeves. Celebrities are embracing the kimono sleeve and rocking this new trend inspired from an old, respected look — and you can, too.

Casual or dressy kimono-sleeve dresses

Take the kimono-sleeve dress from casual to dressy just by changing your shoes and accessories. Sandra Bullock wears her kimono-sleeve dress with casual flats, simple bag and necklace for a day out shopping. Jennifer Lopez dresses hers up with on-trend metallic high-heeled sandals and cuff bracelets. Notice the sleeve length difference in the dresses: Sandra’s dress is long-sleeved, while Jennifer is wearing a three-quarter-length sleeve. Kimono dresses flatter every size and figure, so any woman can enjoy this simple, on-trend style.

Add a little pizzazz to your style with a kimono-sleeve shrug. It’s the perfect accent piece over your favorite tank and pair of jeans on the weekend. For evening, dress it up by wearing it over a slinky dress. Kimono-sleeve shrugs are being seen in a variety of fabrics including silk, wool and knit. This shrug combines this fall’s animal print trend with kimono sleeves.

The kimono-sleeve sweater is making its mark this fall, showing in a variety of styles from boatnecks to cowl necks and three-quarter-length sleeves to long sleeves. The bigger sleeve means ease of movement, and the look is perfect for every shape and size woman. Women are wearing the v-neck and large-neck versions, like the boatneck shown here, in a sexy off-the-shoulder style. Layer with a long-sleeved tee or turtleneck for added warmth. These sweaters are perfect for weekend wear over leggings or jeans, or dressed up with trousers.

Slipping on a winter coat like this couldn’t be easier, especially over a heavy sweater. Kimono sleeves are showing up on all styles of coats from short wools to long raincoats. Whether you wear it to work, out shopping or in the park for a stroll, you will look stylish and feel comfortable. Roll up the cuffs for a casual look, or leave them down for added warmth. Short jackets look just right with trousers, straight-leg pants and boots, or a pencil skirt. Long kimono-sleeve jackets are perfect over a dress, dress pants, or leggings and boots.

The kimono sleeve is in its element on a silk, satin or chiffon blouse, too. Whether it’s a button-down blouse, v-neck, wrap-around or tie-over blouse, you are sure to look stylish while secretly enjoying its comfort. Kimono-sleeve blouses flow with movement and shouldn’t be hidden under a stuffy blazer. Wear over your favorite skirt, straight-leg or ankle pants, or with your favorite flare jeans. Tip: Because kimono-sleeve blouses have a big, billowy look, wear them with skirts and pants with straight lines instead of wide-leg pants so you don’t get lost in your clothes.

When buying a kimono-sleeve dress, make sure the sleeve fits well under your arm and on the shoulder for a flattering fit.
