Wrinkles have become a four-letter word in our youth and beauty obsessed society. So how can we avoid the inevitable laugh lines and crow’s feet that are the markers of a life well lived? These skin care experts offer tips to avoid and even reverse wrinkles. Hallelujah!
Retin-A and Vitamin C
Dr. David E. Bank, President of the New York State Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery says, “Knowing the aging culprits is the first step to keeping your skin looking young and refreshed. Learning how to combat the aging process is second.” His suggested ammunition? Retin-A and Vitamin C, which he says are “the gold standard ingredients in anti-aging products proven to contain anti-oxidant properties to treat and fight lines, wrinkles and age signs.”
Natural Botanicals
Banks also notes that natural plant-based skin care is the way to go: “New ingredients like Pomegranate, Acai and Sea Buckthorn contain potent concentrations of vitamin C, while Avocado Oil and Macadamia Oil have replaced ingredients like lanolin and petrolatum in moisturizers with anti-aging abilities like anti-oxidants and palmitoleic acid.”
Feel the squeeze!
Sandra LaMorgese M.S, H.N.,C.T., founder of Wellness Innovations, and Director of Education for “Cures”, a wellness skincare line, says applying fresh lime juice on your face and neck area after your wash is a great way to perk up your skin. She says, “The juice will tone the skin, and the acidity with naturally exfoliate the skin.”
Take a deep breath
LaMorgese also recommends deep breathing exercises. She explains, “Oxygen will increase circulation and decrease lines and wrinkles.” Ommmmmm…
Hydrate through Exfoliation
Celeste Hilling, CEO of Skin Authority says, “Modern research shows that regular exfoliation speeds up the cell turnover process allowing the body to produce much needed moisture-bearing properties like hyaluronic acid and helps to plump the skin by churning up elastin and collagen production. That’s why I recommend using a resurfacing agent like glycolic acid. Commonly derived from sugar cane, glycolic acid gently dissolves dead surface skin cells signaling the body to replace those skin cells with new, plump cells. With nightly use, moisture can be increased by 33 percent over eight weeks.”
Sunscreen is not just for summer
Hilling says, “Sunscreen is your BFF year-round. To determine the quality, check the SPF number on the label (those with SPF 15 or greater yield the best results). Also, scan the active ingredient label to make sure it has UVA-blocking elements such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or anything in the avobenzone family. To recreate that summer glow, take a moisturizing sunscreen, add two drops of foundation, and mix together for a natural look.”
Be happy!
Beauty Director of Elizabeth Grant Skincare Margot Grant Witz offers one final piece of advice: Be happy. She says, “Funny thought, isn’t it? But it’s true, the happier you are the more your light shines through. There are several studies out this. It is very unclear on if depression itself or antidepressants cause aging, frankly the overall why and how. All they know (whoever they are) is that a happier outlook on life always surpasses the wrinkles anyway.”
