5 Bad habits that age you

When it comes to premature aging, your lifestyle and daily activities have just as much of an impact as the products in your medicine cabinet that make up your daily beauty regimen. Take a look at five bad habits that age you inside and out.

Not getting enough shuteye

A good night’s sleep is just what your body needs to repair cell damage. Also, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you sleep on your back to reduce the chance for sleep lines — wrinkles on the face that come from sleeping on your side or face down.

Additionally, you should avoid sleeping in your makeup. Though it will not cause wrinkles, it will clog pores and may even detract from the repair time during your rest period. Also, makeup sitting on the skin can dry it out and increase its susceptibility to wrinkles.

Forgetting your daily moisturizer and Sunscreen

A simple, inexpensive moisturizer is key in presenting a fresh, glowing face each day. Unsightly creases and lines are much less noticeable when skin has been moisturized. For best results, use it right after washing your face, when the moisture soaks in faster and more effectively.

Skipping sunscreen in your daily beauty routine is one of the fastest ways to wrinkle your skin. Apply sunscreen throughout the day to limit UV exposure, decrease your risk for skin cancer and boost your youthful appearance.

Eating junk food

Sugary foods can make your skin look dull and wrinkled. The next time you’re in the mood for something sweet, opt for fresh fruits, such as blue- or blackberries, that are packed with antioxidants; they help improve your skin instead.

Likewise, take it easy on the alcohol; too many alcoholic beverages can take a toll on your appearance. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has found that chronic heavy alcohol use can cause a premature aging effect of the brain and/or exaggerated aging. Though a glass of red wine may have positive effects on your skin and health (due to the antioxidants it contains), more than that may be detrimental to your health and speed up the aging process.

Stressing out

Increased stress boosts the production of cortisol, a hormone in the body that breaks down skin cells. Though stress is unavoidable, limit its toll through meditation, a little quality time with your friends, or a little exercise. Being active is a wonderful and easy way to stay healthy and feel young. Staying active on a consistent basis can help fight brain fog, inflammation and other health problems.

Smoking

Another reason to quit: Studies are showing that cigarette smoke actually ages skin by breaking down collagen and elastin. The result is thin, prematurely wrinkled skin that ages your appearance.
