We have a love/hate relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow‘s red carpet appearances. She always looks gorgeous — her hair and make-up are flawless — but we’re not always a fan of her dress choices. We’ve always wondered exactly what it takes to get red-carpet ready for an awards show — and now we know, thanks to Ms. Paltrow!
Gwyneth Paltrow’s Emmy awards show prep
Paltrow reveals in her newsletter, GOOP, that she likes to start red carpet prep with a facial. For example, she went to see facialist Sonya Dakar before the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards in September.
“When Gwyneth came to the Sonya Dakar Skin Clinic last week she got the Apple Stem Cell Facial. This includes a series of treatments for the face, neck and chest that leaves skin looking youthful, tight and glowing,” Dakar wrote on GOOP.
Want the benefits of a facial, but can’t afford a pricey celeb one? Dakar shared her tips for clear and glowing skin.
>> “Store eye cream in the fridge — the active ingredients will help reduce puffiness and dark circles, and the cool temperature of the cream itself will reduce swelling in an instant!
>> Stress is a huge factor when you have a big event, which may cause breakouts. Always keep Sonya’s Blemish Buster on an acne spot, a treatment that works overnight to banish breakouts and will not dry out skin.
>> Massage face with a cube of ice to create blood flow and bring oxygen to the surface of the skin.
>> Mix together chamomile tea and green tea, chill in the fridge and put in a mister — spray on the face before and after makeup goes on to shrink pores.”

Hair tips from Gwyneth Paltrow’s mane man
David Babaii has been Paltrow’s hair stylist for the past nine years and knows what works for her. He chose a straight hair look for the show, a style that looks great with her shiny, silky hair.
“To achieve the look, I always start with a small amount of Couture Colour Pequi Oil massaged into the hair, which you can buy at couturecolour.com. It is the one and only product I use on all my clients because it not only provides a mirror-like shine but absorbs instantly into the hair without weighing it down, while protecting your style against humidity and dryness,” he wrote.
“I blow dried her hair with a round brush to create a sort of a second day blow dry look. After hair was dried, I ran additional Pequi Oil through her tresses to lift and define. After all, hair is an accessory and Gwyneth is just perfection.”
Make-up tips from Paltrow’s make-up pro
Kate Lee makes Paltrow’s face look flawless for the red carpet. She recently dished on exactly what it takes to achieve Paltrow’s makeup look from the big night.
>> “I’m really enjoying Chanel Perfection Lumiere Foundation. I apply it with a nylon brush then blend with a beauty blender sponge, which gives a beautifully healthful glow.
>> For the eyes I started with Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre In Emervielle with Fantasme, a bronzy gold creme shadow, which I applied to the whole lid and blended out at the socket. I let some color bleed out to the inner corners of the eye and then added a highlight of shimmer to the center of the lid.
>> Next I added a soft black gel liner (a combination of Noir Kohl Liner and Black Shiseido Brush Liquid Liner) at the base of the lashes. She then added a layer of mascara, more lashes and then another layer of mascara. Right at the end, we decided to add black liner inside the eye to give the look a little more intensity.
>> For Gwyneth, I used an apricot shade on her cheek bones to give dimension.
>> I groomed the brows with a combination of powder and tinted brow gel, which gave them definition — specifically, a Chanel Blond pencil and Anastasia Brow Gel. Then, I highlighted the brow bone with a light matte concealer.”
