Are you a little too comfy with your hairstyle? Have you had the same look in the past 10 New Year’s photos? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then it’s time for a new look! We chatted with Justine Piecuch, a stylist at Boston’s renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, to get some hair tips on reinventing your hairstyle for 2012. Check them out!
If your hair is getting a little stale, the start of a new year is the perfect time to switch up your look. After all, a new year is a fresh start in so many ways, and it’s the perfect time to really make a change. According to Piecuch, change can range from subtle to dramatic. In fact, change doesn’t only encompass your actual hair; it can also mean a change in stylist!
Whatever change you make, you’re sure to feel refreshed afterwards: “A new look can be life changing but incredibly exciting. Sometimes just getting extra compliments can make you feel so great about yourself and be a big boost in self-esteem. Who doesn’t like to get noticed?!”
If you’re not 100 percent sure you’re ready for a change, however, you might want to hold off, Piecuch says: “If you’re not ready and you’re not willing to have complete trust and embrace a change, I recommend waiting.
If you are ready for a change, here are Piecuch’s top six tips for reinventing your hairstyle this year!
Try a different part
We know you’re probably attached to your part, ladies. After all, many of us rarely switch things up when it comes to the side we part our hair on. But trying a different part can give you a completely new look. The best part? It’s not permanent! If you don’t like it, you can always change your part back.
Get a bangin’ new look
Have you always wanted bangs? Have you always been a bit too nervous to try them out? If bangs will work for your face shape, now’s the time to try them out, Piecuch says!
Cut things up
If you haven’t changed the cut of your hair in quite some time, it’s high time to make a change. “If you’re at a loss, tear out pictures from magazines of [looks] that you love. By doing so, your stylist will have an idea of what you’re [envisioning],” Piecuch says.
Get colorful
“Color changing is so important, especially seasonal,” Piecuch says. Whether you’re concerned about gray hairs that are popping up or you’d like to lighten your look for a season ahead, changing the color of your hair can really refresh your look this year!
Try before you buy
Lucky for you, the internet is filled with all sorts of websites that let you upload a photo and try on a hairstyle before you actually take the plunge. Piecuch recommends flipping through magazines or online sites first, and then trying it on before making any drastic changes.
Switch your hair stylist
If you’re still stuck and can’t decide on the best way to reinvent your look this year, it might be time to seek a new opinion. “Sometimes you get stuck in a rut and it’s hard to figure out how to make a change,” Piecuch says. “This is only recommended if all else fails and you’re at a complete loss!”
