Best in beauty at the Oscars 2012

The celebrities turned on their Hollywood smiles and donned some gorgeous frocks and fantastic hair and makeup — here’s who we think rocked the red carpet the best at this year’s Academy Awards.

Some people always turn out looking fantastic during awards season — Gwyneth Paltrow, Penelope Cruz, to name just two. But this year, our list of the best in hair and makeup includes many newer faces to the red carpet. Here are our top five choices on who rocked the best looks.

Emma Stone

This charming young actress is like a breath of fresh air. With her stunning red Giambattista Valli gown with the oversized red bow at the shoulder, Stone didn’t need much else in the form of jewellery or elaborate hair or makeup to add to the look. She kept it simple with soft pink lipstick, full, long lashes and liner on the eyes. The simplicity keeps the look young, fresh and all together stunning.

Jennifer Lopez

Whether she had a wardrobe malfunction or not on the stage, this mom of twins always knows how to work that red carpet. Her deeply cut Zuhair Murad gown offered enough sparkle that JLo knew it was smart to go with subtle glamour when it came to her hair and makeup. Her hair was swept up and into a bun, which showed off her glowing skin. Her eyes were smokey with a bit of shimmer and lips neutral, keeping the look sophisticated.

Rooney Mara

Mara’s striking, heavy, blunt cut bangs are like an accessory in and of themselves. Her angular features and pitch black hair set against her white Givenchy gown creates such a contrast, you can’t help but stare at this stunner. Although we wish she’d worn a few more accessories, we do adore the bold red lip against her milky skin.

Michelle Williams

With so many neutral, black and white gowns on the red carpet, Michelle Williams in her stunning coral Louis Vuitton dress was one of the standouts of the night. Williams looked demure yet naturally pretty with her short blond hair and lipstick in a coral shade matching her gown. A bit of eyeliner completed the look by adding definition to her eyes.

Jessica Chastain

With her ornate Alexander McQueen gown, Jessica Chastain paired the perfect hair and makeup. After all, with such a dramatic dress, one would want to keep the makeup more simple, as the star from The Help did, with lipstick in a neutral warm shade of pink, a soft tawny blush and eyeliner with a subtle winged tip. Her hair (in a warm hue that went well with the gold overlay on her gown) had beachy waves and was swept up in a pretty half-updo — which helped keep the look beautiful without becoming fussy.
