Cher’s yellow plaid mini skirt/jacket combo outfit is perhaps the most memorable look to come out of the ’90s. Iggy Azalea certainly thought so when she copied it for her “Fancy” music video.
Romy and Michele
Romy and Michele have killer fashion sense throughout the movie (despite what the haters say), but the latexy outfits they sport for their “Time After Time” dance are the definition of awesome.
The Craft
The Craft was all about the punky schoolgirl look, and I couldn’t get enough of it as a teen. It was cute with just the right amount of bad girl mixed in and made me feel like the perfect rebel.
True Romance
Alabama is essentially the ’90s version of Marilyn Monroe. Her outfits hug all her curves, but are also fun and super colorful. Plus she owned the stretch print pant before anyone else.
Reality Bites
I think Reality Bites is personally responsible for bringing back the oversized vest and ’60s retro look. However, no one can quite pull it off the way Miss Winona “too cool” Ryder did.
Empire Records
And we’re back to the plaid miniskirt! However, this time, it’s been paired with awesome ankle boots for a much grungier look. Corey nailed the good girl on top, funky girl on bottom with just a hint of belly in between.
Buffy
Buffy defined sporty chic in the ’90s. She managed to kick ass and be super stylish all at the same time. If I could find those faux short/leggings, I would never stop wearing them.
Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman kicked off the ’90s with a fashionable bang. Personally, I love Vivian’s prostitute style more than her rich-girl style, but Julia Roberts rocks both, because, well, she’s Julia Roberts.
10 Things… about you
10 Things I Hate About You put two awesome styles up against each other in the forms of Kat and Bianca Stratford. Older sister ruled punk with those signature army pants, and younger sister owned prep with form-fitting dresses and cute sweater sets.
Cruel Intentions
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character in Cruel Intentions dressed better than any teenager I ever met. I would gladly take all the clothes she wore in that film, if I thought I could pull them off (which I don’t).
Can’t Hardly Wait
Can’t Hardly Wait reminds us that the ’90s were all about tight crop tops and hip-hugging skirts. If the popular girls’ outfits were also matching sets, they’d fit right in to 2015 fashion.
