Battle of the flicks: Man of Steel vs. This Is the End

Man of Steel

This modern superhero flick does a prime job of making us care about this odd man (by Earth’s terms) who’s lost on a planet, far, far away. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) goes for a darker, deeper Superman, giving him a strong backstory on two different planets.

At times the story gets a little flimsy, but terrific actors like Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Kevin Costner really sell it to the audience.

Visually, the otherworldly styling improves upon any Superman flick created so far and Cavill wins the hottie award, hands down.

Joanna Langfield of Movie Minute said, “A Superman for the 21st century, this sweeping epic soars, bursting with ambition, a keen sense of drama, and some knockout special effects.”

Stephanie Zacharek of the Village Voice said, “There’s almost a story here. And the actors, including the picture’s quietly dazzling star, Henry Cavill, do their damnedest to draw it out.”

Manohla Dargis of the New York Times said, “A big-studio release that, from start to gaga finish, is a hosanna to a single company, its products, philosophy, and implicit politics.”

This Is the End

This slack-pack of comic actors hide out at James Franco’s house during the end of the world.

Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel and Danny McBride regress into panicked goofballs, drinking their own pee in the name of survival.

Emma Watson makes an appearance, brandishing an axe, and stealing supplies.

This movie is full of dude humor and penis jokes that are quite funny if you can let yourself go to the raunchy side.

Elizabeth Weitzman of the New York Daily News said, “It’s no minor accomplishment to make one of the most indulgent projects in Hollywood history. But with “This Is the End,” Seth Rogen and his pals have indeed achieved this dubious goal.”
