Did John Mayer finally respond to Taylor Swift’s “Dear John”?

A year after Taylor Swift and John Mayer broke up, she was out with a less-than-nice song about him. After years of silence, it looks like he might have issued a response. But is he attacking her or apologizing?

At first listen, John Mayer’s new song seems like any other John Mayer song. After all, the singer is known for relationship ballads. This one is a little less positive than the rest, but it happens.

But it seems that the song might actually be about someone specific — and that someone might just be a very famous ex-girlfriend.

Mayer and Taylor Swift briefly dated in 2009, and the next year Swift came out with “Dear John,” a song obviously directed at Mayer. At the time, he said he was “humiliated” (not to mention that it didn’t make him look too good).

But for his new song, it looks like he might be responding to Swift. The lyrics of “Paper Doll” tell a story.

“Here’s a dress of gold and blue. Sure was fun being good to you,” he sings in the new song.

Swift sang about “the girl in the dress” in her song, saying, “Don’t you think I was too young ?to be messed with, the girl in the dress? cried the whole way home.”

Mayer also mentions a scarf, “Moroccan red.” Not only has the 23-year-old singer mentioned (many, many times) that her favorite color is red, but she even named her album after it (and has been seen, at least a few times, in a red scarf).

The next clue comes from Swift’s current single, “22.” Mayer seems to respond with the lines: “You’re like 22 girls in one, and none of them know what they’re runnin’ from.” That lyric may also relate to line in Swift’s song: “And I’ll look back in regret how I ignored when they said, ‘Run as fast as you can.'”

The final clue might be the most obvious line in “Paper Doll.” In Swift’s song, she sings, “You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain.”

“Cut the cord and pull some strings, and make yourself some angel wings,” Mayer sings in his song. “And if those angel wings don’t fly, someone’s gonna paint you another sky.”

Could Mayer actually be apologizing?
