Sci-fi genre gets much-needed respect at Saturn Awards

Wednesday, stars came out for the 39th Annual Saturn Awards. The year’s biggest TV and movie titles were honored including The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and The Walking Dead.

When it comes to Hollywood accolades, science fiction rarely gets the respect it deserves. Thankfully, we have the Saturn Awards to pick up the slack. On June 26, they held their annual ceremony, which honors the best in sci-fi, horror and fantasy.

This year, The Avengers topped the winner’s list with four awards: Best Science Fiction Film, Best Supporting Actor (Clark Gregg), Best Direction (Joss Whedon) and Best Special Effects (Janek Sirrs, Jeff White, Guy Williams, Dan Sudick).

On the TV front, Breaking Bad walked away with three trophies, including Best Television Presentation and Best Actor for Bryan Cranston, who tied with Kevin Bacon for The Following. The Walking Dead, Revolution and Teen Wolf also got some love.
