20 Fads from ’90s sitcoms that never should have died

Mmmmm. Donuts. The only thing Homer loved as much as beer was donuts. Why did we get so down on donuts? Krispy Kremes closed nationwide. Everyone got so hyper-vigilant about carbs that donuts took an unfair hit. We want them back.

Remember when even celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow did the Dharma? There just wasn’t anything cuter in the ’90s than long bangs pulled back with darling bobby pins and short hair either smoothed out or fluffed up. This is another ’90s hair fad we’ll take back, thank you very much — The Dharma for short hair, The Rachel for medium length hair and The Phoebe for long hair.

Fran Drescher in The Nanny looked more polished as a nanny in her miniskirt-New-York-fabulous suits than most professional women. Who does that? Who dresses like she’s the CEO of Apple to supervise kids all day? Fran did. And she did it splendidly. We’ll take her over-the-top suits, miniskirts and shoes back.

You can keep Dr. Huxtable’s terrible sweaters and Denise’s boho-chic wardrobe. We’ll take Clair’s pumps that matched her every lawyer ensemble and her amazing formal-wear shoes. Remember those unstoppable gold pumps she bought for the “smooth” contest and then broke her toe, which in turn broke her heart because she couldn’t wear both shoes? Clair was the mom with the shoes, clothes and closet that every daughter wanted to play dress up in.

Murphy Brown did for flared, shoulder-length hair in the ’90s what Linda Evans from Dallas did for it in the ’80s. The hairstyle sort of flared and feathered away from one’s face and then fell to the shoulders in a natural wave. Of course it was Candice Bergen, who could have shaved her hair in rows and still looked great. This look needs to come back. It’s sort of a hybrid between the stick-straight or spiral-curl extremes we see today.
