The Royal Mint announced plans to give away commemorative silver pennies to U.K. babies born on the same day as Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s child.
U.K. moms- and dads-to-be have something exciting to look forward to — beyond the birth of their babies, of course. CNN reports that the Royal Mint has announced it will be giving away special silver coins to any U.K. babies born on the same day as the royal baby.

The coin will be a silver penny dated 2013 and will arrive in either a blue or pink pouch, depending on the baby’s gender. Parents who want to claim a coin for their baby must first register with the Royal Mint’s Facebook page. Only 2,013 coins will be available and parents will have to upload a scanned copy of their baby’s birth certificate to prove that their child was born on whatever day the royal baby decides to make his or her appearance.
Will the royal baby arrive sooner than we think? >>
Shane Bissett, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, spoke about the gifts and how they reflect a long tradition of giving silver for good luck after a new birth. “The birth of the royal baby will be a joyous occasion not just for Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge but also for the whole nation. However, it will also be a special day for many mothers and fathers across the country as they too welcome the arrival of their new baby, hence why we wanted to extend this historical moment to them with a lucky silver penny,” he said.
How will we learn of the birth of the royal baby? >>
Prince William and Kate Middleton might need a few silver pennies of their own. Their baby might be born into a life of luxury, but that life doesn’t come without a few risks. The royal baby will be at great risk of being kidnapped and will have a strong network of bodyguards protecting it once it arrives. Kidnapping threats aside, new-mom-to-be Kate is already feeling those pre-birth jitters as she, and the rest of the world, count down the days to the baby’s arrival.
