A sci-fi action film in 3D starring Sons of Anarchy hottie Charlie Hunnam opens against a sequel to an Adam Sandler laugher. Which one is worth your money? Probably not such a tough call…
Pacific Rim
Set in the near future, Pacific Rim tells the story of alien monsters called Kaiju (Japanese for giant beast) who make their way into the Pacific Ocean through a paranormal breach in a deep ocean trench. Huh? Another dimension opens up in the sea for monsters to go through?
To be honest, we didn’t think the plot made a ton of sense, particularly when they referenced the “fact” that dinosaurs had two brains (they didn’t, it was a myth). But this movie is an ocular feast and a thrill ride from start to finish. And, hey, it’s got Charlie Hunnam. ‘Nuff said.

Marjorie Baumgarten of the Austin Chronicle said, “There’s no denying Pacific Rim is the best film of its kind. It remains to be seen whether the film’s epic clawing and clanking satisfies a pent-up demand equal to its ambitions.”
Jocelyn Noveck of the Associated Press said, “Though it’s made by an obviously gifted director and will likely please devotees of the genre, it ultimately feels very short on character and long on noise, noise, noise.”
Louise Keller of Urban Cinefile said, “With eye-popping visuals that resemble a digital lightshow, Guillermo del Toro’s film about an alien invasion combated by man-operated giant robots is extravagant in scale and loudly strident.”

Grown Ups 2
Adam Sandler and his lovingly goofy friends are back for another comedy about un-adulthood. David Spade meets the son he never knew he had, a giant version of himself named Braden, played surprisingly by The Hunger Games‘ Alexander Ludwig. Father and son are mega awkward and make the funniest relationship in the movie.
While we thoroughly enjoyed the ’80s party thrown by Sandler at the end of the movie, the rest of the story is made up of poop jokes, pee jokes or, simply, bad jokes.

Sara Stewart of the New York Post said, “The movie lurches from one gross-out scene to another, flipping the bird at continuity and logic. It honestly seems as if Sandler and his team descended on a random suburb, halfheartedly improvising and moving on when they got bored.”
Linda Barnard of the Toronto Star said, “Adam Sandler scrapes the bottom of the barrel — and then he pukes into it — with Grown Ups 2.”
Claudia Puig of USA Today said, “Since this is a re-tread with the unimaginative name of Grown Ups 2, we’ll cite some numerical stats that underscore the movie’s lowbrow irrelevance: Pee sight gags: 4. Poop jokes: 2. Vomit scenes: 2. Variations on a flatulence theme: 4.”

The SheKnows movie winner of the week is Pacific Rim for its eye-popping 3D visuals and the general hotness of Charlie Hunnam.
