VIDEO: Volatile love? Emma Roberts’ domestic violence arrest

Emma Roberts was arrested for allegedly punching boyfriend Evan Parker in the nose. So why does the media continue to glamorize their unhealthy relationship?

Emma Roberts was spotted just three days ago with extremely bruised legs and it looks like her injuries may be related to her recent domestic violence incident. Roberts, the 22-year-old actress and niece of Julia Roberts, was arrested in Canada on July 7, 2013 after police were called to her Montreal hotel room.

Once law enforcement arrived, they found her boyfriend, actor Evan Peters, with a bloody nose. TMZ reports Roberts may have even bitten his neck, though other sources claim this is not true. Montreal police immediately arrested Roberts under suspicion of domestic violence. Yet hours later she was free to go home when Peters refused to press charges.

Troubling is the press coverage of Roberts and Parkers’ recent fight. Multiple celebrity gossip outlets characterized Emma Roberts and Evan Peters as a couple who have a “passionate” and “intense” relationship.

However, coverage of Roberts seems far less critical than we’ve seen in other celebrity domestic violence cases. Us Weekly even claimed that “Young love isn’t always pretty” and offered quotes from insiders who were quick to absolve Roberts of any wrongdoing.

“They’re a couple of young kids,” said one of the magazine’s sources. “Their romance is pretty extreme. They just behave in a way that’s very passionate.”

It’s disappointing and worrisome to hear such a widely-circulated publication associate domestic violence — physically hurting your significant other — with adjectives like passion and romance. Us Weekly even attributed Roberts and Parkers’ altercation to typical immaturity.

The magazine chose to end their story with another disturbing quote from an inside source. “They will not break up,” reported the magazine’s source. “When they are good, they are crazy in love.”

Today Emma Roberts was seen bawling outside a New Orleans studio as Evan Peters consoled her. It’s unknown why exactly Roberts was so upset, but it seems very possible it could be related to the public outing of her domestic violence arrest.

A rep for Emma Roberts released a statement calling the couple’s fight and Roberts’ July arrest as an “unfortunate incident.”
