Selena Gomez just turned 21 and her new video “Slow Down” aims to prove that she isn’t an innocent Disney starlet anymore.
As if her role in Spring Breakers wasn’t enough, Selena Gomez wants you to know she’s an adult.
The ex-Barney and Friends dancer and ex-wizard of Waverly Place is all grown up and her new video for “Slow Down” kinda makes you want to scream the same thing at her.
“Slow down, Selena!”
GIF proof that Selena is all grown up >>
The video is pretty much a straightforward performance video with Selena in various places — in the back of a vintage Parisian Mercedes, channeling JLo in an evidently very humid nightclub, stomping through a tunnel and rubbing up against a wall.
And that’s about it. The song is fine. The video is fine if a bit boring. There’s nothing earth-shattering here.
What is noticeable, however, is this is her sexiest performance yet, from the lyrics to her risqué choice in clothing. But if I looked like her, I’d probably go out in only a suit jacket without a bra as well.
Has 1D made the best video ever? >>
Throughout the video, I got the feeling — especially in the Mercedes— that she was playing dress-up. She certainly has her style down off the screen, but on-screen I think she needs to search a bit more to find her style as an artist.
In the song, she purrs, “You say I’m ready for inspection/ show me how you make a first impression,” and “You know I’m good with mouth to mouth resuscitation/ Breathe me in, breathe me out/
So amazing.”
I don’t exactly consider that slowing down, Selena.
Battle of the ex-Disney stars: Miley vs. Selena >>
Maybe it’s that I have a family of my own or maybe it’s that Selena Gomez still has a baby face, but seeing what’s happened to other teen stars (Amanda Bynes, anyone?), this newer, more mature Selena had best be careful she doesn’t move too fast.
