A deeper look at VMAs Video of the Year nominee: “Mirrors

Justin Timberlake‘s ode to true love, “Mirrors,” is up for Video of the Year at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Here’s why we think it should take home the Moonman.

The nominees for Video of the Year at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards include videos that feature odes to used clothes (“Thrift Shop”) and naked women (“Blurred Lines”), but only one video celebrates true love in a sepia-toned music video.

Justin Timberlake‘s “Mirrors” — the second single off The 20/20 Experience album — takes us through a relationship from the first meeting to death-do-them-part.

The song is a page out of Timberlake’s life — not his relationship with wife Jessica Biel, but the relationship between his grandparents, William and Sadie Bomar. William died in December 2012.

“‘Mirrors’ is a love song to someone that you feel like is, you know, sort of your other half,” Timberlake said of the song.

“One of the most valuable things in a relationship is being able to constantly change and be individual, but look to the other side to the person that you’re with and and know that they’re changing as well individually, but somehow you two can mirror each other and be the other half of that world that you both create.”

And Grandma Sadie was touched.

“Justin didn’t tell me he was doing it (making the video), it was a surprise,” she told Grazia magazine. “He said, ‘You have to see this video, just you sit down and watch it.’ I was moved by it, it brings tears to my eyes. It’s a lovely tribute to us.”

The video revolves around the future couple as they meet during their teenage years.

They find out their future at a carnival — and stay together until the heartbreaking end.

“Mirrors” shows us that true love does exist — and “forever” is a real thing, even today.

Our only gripe? JT doesn’t show up until the 5:45 mark.

He makes it worth the wait with his trench coat, side part and steel-tipped shoes.

It’s arguably the most inventive dance sequence ever.

A love story and Timberlake’s signature dance moves? What else could you want? Nothing, that’s what.
