Shailene Woodley cuts off her hair for new role, and charity

Shailene Woodley considers her hair one of her most defining traits, so she didn’t take it lightly when a role had her cutting it all off. She decided to take the moment and share it with her fans.

If Shailene Woodley is not known for her long locks, it’s at least one of her most defining characteristics. So it may have come as a shock to many of her fans that she decided to cut off those locks.

However, the haircut was for two good causes. The main reason she decided to let her hair go was for a role. In her new film, she will be playing a cancer patient in The Fault in Our Stars.

Woodley decided not to make the hair loss all for nothing, though. She decided to cut it off to donate to the nonprofit group, Children With Hair Loss. Woodley’s hair will soon be made into a wig to help someone in need.

Amazing Spider-Man already replaced Shailene Woodley? >>

“Some of you may know, I will be cutting my hair off this coming weekend in order to help morph my physical body into that of the incredible Hazel Grace Lancaster — and I couldn’t be more amped,” Woodley wrote on her Tumblr last week. “Not only do I have the opportunity to externally shift my current establishment of self, but I have the blessed gift of donating my long locks to a wonderful organization who will then create a wig for someone in need. WHAT AN HONOR.”

Woodley also tweeted about the hair cut.

Woodley likes to look all natural and added that she has been growing her hair for many reasons (including a love of Pocahontas) but that she realized it signaled strength for her.

“I felt connected to my womanhood, connected to my ancestors… and for the longest time, I was committed to never chopping it off,” she continued. “Cut to: now. On Saturday, it will be the shortest it’s ever been. And I feel so relieved, so ready, so dedicated.”

Kate Winslet joins Divergent >>

Woodley’s new character, Hazel Grace Lancaster, is a 16-year-old cancer patient who joins a support group and falls in love with another member of the group. The actress wanted to make sure she took this opportunity to help others in need, and encourage her fans to do the same.

“If you are in the position to cut off eight inches of your hair, then I strongly urge you to do it,” she said. “There are so many human beings out there who would LOVE the opportunity to possess long hair, but simply cannot because of their current situation. Let’s share!”

Woodley will next be seen in The Spectacular Now, a film that will put her back in high school, and is also starring in Divergent.
