J.J. Abrams’ mysterious new teaser-trailer Stranger

The internet is buzzing with speculation about J.J. Abrams’ new teaser-trailer that was just released without any info on what it’s promoting. Is it a movie? A book? An interactive puzzle? One thing you can count on from Abrams — he knows how to hook his audience.

Truth is Stranger than fiction, but when it’s J.J. Abrams, the fiction is weird, too. This teaser is in stark black and white. A chilling piano score plunks slowly, building suspense. A man emerges from the water, shedding ropes that once bound his wrists.

A deep, older male voice narrates, suggesting an omnipotent storyteller. Could it be god? A king? A father? The man’s future self?

Possible Lost spin-off

The voice seems to know answers to long-kept secrets. It says, “He arrived knowing nothing of himself. Who is he?” Good question. Some on the internet are speculating that he’s a character who will be featured in the Lost spin-off series that will include internet-based content. But that’s not the only possibility.

Promo for a book called S.

The voice continues, “Soon he will know. Because what begins at the water shall end there, and what ends there shall once more begin.” Here, Abrams seems to be suggesting a new species, as all life emerged from the ocean, but what is emerging here? Water equals life on planet Earth, but is this necessarily Earth? Could it be a man on a Goldilocks planet? And who uses the word “shall?” Makes it sound biblical. Some are suggesting this is a tease for a new novel called S., a collaboration between Abrams and Doug Dorst, scheduled to be published on Oct. 29 — just in time for Halloween.

The narrator concludes his freaky story with, “This is what happens: Men become lost. Men vanish. Men are erased, and reborn.” Then the video reveals a man with his mouth sewn shut. What secrets has he witnessed? What story is he prevented from telling? Could it be about the creation of man as a species?

An ad for the new TV show Believe on NBC

This could also possibly be a tease for a new show on NBC called Believe, with Abrams as executive producer, about a young girl with supernatural gifts who is threatened by evil forces.

Whichever project from the masterful J.J. Abrams that this video is teasing, it’s likely to be a cultural game-changer. Weigh in with your own conspiracy theories below!
