September movie preview: SheKnows picks the flicks

The summer movie train has rolled out and now we’re gearing up for awards season. Does that mean we should count out these September releases? Not by a long shot. Check out our picks for September cinema.

1

The Family

This fish-out-of-water action comedy stars Robert DeNiro as a mafia boss whose family goes into witness protection in France with less-than-stellar success. Michelle Pfeiffer plays his mob wife and mother to their two kids, Belle (Dianna Agron) and Warren (John D’Leo). Turns out you can take mobsters out of the “family” but you can’t take the “family” out of the mobsters, making for darkly funny consequences for this cut-throat pack of snitches. The Family opens Friday, Sept. 13.

Hunky Hugh Jackman takes a serious turn as father-in-peril Keller Dover. Discovering his 6-year-old daughter is missing, he turns to Detective Loki, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, to search for answers. Growing desperate after a lead to an RV driver (Paul Dano) goes cold, Dover takes matters into his own hands. Prisoners gets released Sept. 20.

Dorothy in 3-D? Our brains have just exploded all over the yellow brick road! We’ve all seen it a million times, but now we can take our kids to see it in glorious 3-D to celebrate Oz’s 75th anniversary. Thank you, technology! Now, flying monkeys, melting witches and those fab ruby slippers can burst off the screen, making for one tornado you won’t want to miss! The Wizard of Oz: An IMAX 3-D Experience opens Sept. 20.

Don Jon

Adorbs Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a ladies man, able to hook-up with a new gal every weekend. Also hooked on porn, this charmer realizes something is missing from his life when he meets Barbara Sugarman, played by the stunning Scarlett Johansson. Barbara is a young woman obsessed with finding her knight-in-shining-armor. Fantasy clashes with reality as both struggle to find a true connection in Gordon-Levitt’s directing debut. Way to go, Joe! Don Jon begins seducing audiences on Sept. 27.

Rush

Hottie Chris Hemsworth stars in a floppy, blond wig as real-life Formula 1 race car driver James Hunt. Hunt’s rivalry with fellow racer Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) heated up the meant streets of the Grand Prix in the 1970s. Directed by Oscar darling Ron Howard, this high-speed psychological drama also stars Olivia Wilde. Buckle up, Rush hits the road Sept. 27.
